Nina on the left, Sonya on the right!

The Far Woods is a creative studio founded by sister-artists Sonya and Nina Montenegro.

We are makers and menders working to repair the disconnection that defines the modern era. We believe that art and hand-making are absolute necessities in these times.

The visible heartbeat of our practice lives in the physical things we create—our prints, books, and the community spaces where we teach others.

We are deeply invested in the process of creation—most importantly, in what happens during that process, to ourselves and to anyone we are leading through it.

Whether we are working in thread, ink, paper, or paint, we are always working to re-weave connection. We are here to remember what is ancient, to shape the future, and to ground ourselves and each other in what is real.

Published books include Worry Medicine: Remedies and Rituals for Anxious Times (Amber Lotus 2025), Mending Life: A Handbook for Repairing Clothes and Hearts (Sasquatch 2020), and A Year in the Garden (Timber Press 2017).

Proudly represented by Kate Woodrow at Present Perfect Literary.

Based in the Midwest (Bloomington, IN and Louisville, KY) on the unceded homeland of the Miami, Delaware, Potawatomi, Shawnee, Eastern Band of the Cherokee, and Osage Nation.
