There is a Highlight on our Instagram page that may be helpful for frame ideas & inspiration, called "Framing"
Below are our recommendations for framing our artworks that have been designed & printed at unusual sizes.
We always advise placing the print in a frame that is BIGGER than the print, so that there is plenty of space around the print for it to “breathe”. You can see what we mean with this example:
The print above on the left is much more cramped than the print above on the right with “breathing room”, which is more elegant in its spaciousness.
To buy your own frame, measure your print & take these dimensions with you to the art store or frame shop. Or a simple google search with the dimensions will turn up lots of frame options to buy. Include frame type if you are wanting to narrow down your search (ie. search “11 x 14 float frame” or “8 x 10 wooden frame”)
Framing option 1: Bring the print to a professional frame shop. Yes, this option isn’t cheap but it is the easiest, and surest, way to get a print framed up beautifully. Many towns have a local frame shop - they sure would appreciate your business!
Framing option 2: Order a custom frame from this company. Choose from a bunch of frame options (we like the white or natural wood) and a mat size and they will ship the frame to your home — then you insert the print!!
Framing option 3: Buy a standard frame size LARGER than the print and “float” the print in the frame. Choose a frame that is bigger than the print on all sides, even if it is not equally “bigger” on all sides. For example, if the print dimensions are 5 x 8.5, choosing an 8 x 10 frame would give the print space all around even though the space on top and bottom will be different that the space on the sides. Next you’ll create a clean, white background for your print. Trace around the cardboard insert or frame backing in your frame onto high-quality white paper (drawing paper is a good option) — this is your background. Cut out the background. Center your print onto the background and tape into place (use small rolls of masking tape, one in each corner of the print). Place background with print attached onto frame backing and insert into frame against the glass. The print will appear "on top" of the paper in the frame and surrounded by the white space of the background. This is less professional looking than getting it matted by a frame shop, but it still looks smart!!
Framing option 4: Buy a “floating frame” This is a frame that sandwiches the print between two pieces of glass (or plexiglass!) so that it looks like the art is "free floating" in the frame, with ample space around the print to “breath”! (See print above on the right). Obviously with this frame the space around the print is whatever color the wall is behind the framed print. One option for purchase.
Framing option 5: A (magentic) poster frame! These are very cool — they are composed of four horizontal pieces of wood — one pair to sandwich and hold the top of your print and the other pair to sandwich and hold the bottom of the print. The result is a unique frame that doesn’t require precise measurements! Here is one place you can buy a frame like this.
Framing option 6: This option still includes buying your own frame, at a bigger size than your print, but then you can: Order a custom mat online here OR buy a mat cutter and make your own custom-sized mat! Check it out here.
